Finally had a chance to read your DJ Spotlight piece (CONGRAAATS WELL DESERVED!! BIGGUP!)
Listened to this after seeing the link on the spotlight..and da-dang! I wish i would have gone to the party now.
If you have some tips for scratching...aka: scratching for dummies. I would totally read them.
Great mix/track selection.
Thank you Kat Von Bass Cadet!
Let's see here... scratch tips.... the best thing I can recommend is learning all the individual scratches first. There are quite a few, but it's like learning to speak a language. You have to learn the words before you can put together sentences. The best source of learning these are
Q-Bert's DIY Vol. 1.
This DVD is worth every penny. Learn all the individual scratches forwards and backwards, sideways, and upside down. Then start trying to string them together. Eventually you will get the feel of the timing, and you will start to see how the scratches fit together. Other than that just practice, practice, practice.... and then when you are sick or practicing, do it some more.
Something I did to fast track myself was to get finger weights and a grip master:
Finger WeightsGrip MasterYou need a lot of control and strength in your fingers/wrists/tendons to be able to scratch fast. So I would use the grip master when I was away from the tables, and the finger weights when I was practicing scratching. If you practice with the finger weights for like a month, until they feel comfortable and you can scratch fine with them on, when you take them off you literally double your speed. It's insane.
