three new tracks
« on: January 20, 2010, 06:14:23 PM »
I learned a lot in making these tunes. Things that I wish i would have been doing all along.

Haunted made this after a conversation with psilogod about stereo headroom, and filters.

Why Wasn't I dead? samples are from a pastor that claims God sent him to hell for 23 minutes so that he could tell(profit off) the people of earth.

False Teeth experimenting with EQing the fuck out of everything. and some mastering.

All constructive Feedback is Appreciated!!

Love the groove on "Why Wasn't I Dead"! All good tracks dude. I did notice that on "False Teeth" the snare dips a little on the 2. The snare on the 4 is clear though. My best guess from listening would be that the reverb you have on the snare has some low end conflicting with the bass. If you are using a send for the verb, eq the send track that you have the reverb on and cut everything below around 200-300 hz. If you are using the verb as an insert, I would recommend you use a send/return. Using a send/return allows you to shape the sound of the reverb independently of the snare or whatever other sound(s) you would like to add reverb to.

Listening on my headphones though, I will follow up when I get home and can monitor properly.

experimenting with EQing the fuck out of everything.

Yes... this is key. If you want to get that super polished sound you gotta eq everything and make them all sit in their own space. What do you use for your kick and snare samples if you don't mind me asking?

Not sure what all Kev has shown you, but if you ever feel like having a chat about gain structure, I might have a thing or two you could use.

I just told him to redline everything, and preferably push it to like +10db, and then put max reverb on the master channel after he cuts the bass out of the entire song. that's what I usually do anyways.

word, the snare is dipping out. Hmm, i wonder why. Its not dropping out in my DAW. Maybe its an older version i uploaded, have to check later.

the low cut and high cut on a reverb means the freqs. in which the reverb will be applied right? at first it confused me for a filter?

What do you use for your kick and snare samples if you don't mind me asking?

Like the samples themselves? Ive been cutting from MP3's or vinyl and building a library. Recently got my hands on a 'minimal techno' sample pack that had some really dope drum samples that i've used. Did you mean the eqing on my kicks and snares? Definitely varies but,  reverb to taste, free filter high passed around 200hz for snares and 70hz for kicks. why was i dead has some compression on the drum loop. Not much else, Looking to improve them tho.

Not sure what all Kev has shown you, but if you ever feel like having a chat about gain structure, I might have a thing or two you could use.

Well, it's basically eq'ing/filtering out those frequencies. But if it's on the reverb unit itself, it is only cutting the reverb signal and leaving your original untouched. There are many ways to do it... using a cut on the reverb unit itself if it has it, using a chain of reverb -> eq... it's all in how you want to control the sound.

Like the samples themselves?

Yep, that's what I was wondering... I got some stuff you may dig... some of my personal stash that took a while to find. Not cause they are anything special, but because I had to sift through a lot of garbage sample packs.

What program are you using?  Reason? Logic?

I have drum sample packs you might like, maybe we could do a swap or something.

Haunted - At the begining of the track were you trying to make it seem like it was halloween night or something? If that is the case you did a great job of it, if that was also the case you kept it that theme all throughout the track. The wolf howl was a really nice touch. i like it.

Why Wasnt I Dead - When i first say the track title i was expecting it to sound simular to Haunted. Then when i listened to it the track didnt sound anything like i thought. I really like the wobs that are after 1:49. good job also

False Teeth - This one is really good. the wobs all the way through this are amazing...the sound you put in (kinda sounds like a whale) is a lil strange but it adds to the flavor of the track

personally when i first say the names i thought the two tracks Haunted and Why Wasnt I Dead were going to be a lil bit more scarier and maybe a lil bit more violent but overall they were awesome. Keep up the good work!

Was...

Then I got a mac. I still have a soft spot for Ableton, but Logic is Ableton on steroids for the super nerd. The technical abilities of Logic are insane. Hyper editor, Environment window, media management... Ableton leaves a lot to be desired after using Logic.

Big up on production!
Why Wasn't I Dead is one nice tune, very nice bass line in Haunted, False Teeth has an amazingly chill vibe.

lol  :P

and Digga all these tracks are a huge improvement. i listened to whalestep or song (the 1st track you ever sent me) and by a long ways have you improved. i think your bass synth/samples/whatever it is you are using, well i think it can be worked more. some of it still has the "fart" sound lol. and no im not making fun of you. like i said, they are huge improvements. I think i like haunted the best out of these three. but the drums on why wasnt I dead are there! i like that sound you have.
good job man
keep it up

I was asking both of you what you used.  I use logic myself, I finally have sometime to do some stuff with it.  I am currently working on my first track.  :)

Nice tracks man! Didn't know you were producing!  8) Glad to have you on board. Haunted was cool but I wasn't much a fan of the bassline. I will say though that your eq / mixdown job on that track was pretty damn good. Why Wasn't I Dead so far was my fav. Had a nice full sounding low end and the overall track it self was nicely done. The slowed down drum loop worked nicely in it. False Teeth is way chill. I like your percussion in the second half. Subtle but just enough to keep your attention. Again, it definitely sounds like you have a good handle on mixdowns. :)

Thanks for the review B! jus dont know, I seem to make a bit of creepy depressing stuff, not necessarily on purpose. Just comes out that way.

Hell yeah thanks for listening and the feedback Chi. Been producing for a few months now, my turntables have been collecting a lot of dust.
My next goal is to improve my overall bass sound.  Again thanks for the input.

Thanks Psilo. bit of this was inspired by you.  ;) like i said, working on improving my overall bass sound (less fart more womp), also want to work on melodies. Kev, remember that Key Chart you were telling me about? want.

to me thats alright if you wanna make creepy tracks, personally if i could make some tracks i would be doing something simular. but then again when somebody make a track isnt is typically gonna be the mood they are in? like one day you decide to make a track, that day you may feel sad. that sadness may come out in the track?
