What are your thoughts on Dubstep?
« on: July 22, 2010, 07:03:20 AM »
Just a question on what ppl think of dubstep, is it just the newest trend or do ppl really like it?  As for myself, I do enjoy some of it, but I hear ppl say its hard to dance to and its just alot of bass mixing with samples (ex:vocal samples of current songs and old hip hop vocal samples). I've talked to ppl and some say it gets boring and just alot of bass that overwhelms the rest of the track.  And what do drum and bass/ jungle folks think of it?  I even read somewhere that its popular because girls like to bump and grind to it and the guys say "yea thats the shit" lol whatever.  I went to wurk and heard Man machine and his set was great.  I know everyone has their favorite style: house, breaks, trance, etc. but I want to know what you think. Be honest, don't say "yea its great cuz i know a dj who spins dubstep and the ppl love it."  I was talking to one of the staff at wurk and they said they its not really their favorite.  Alot of ppl like the 4/4, so tell me what you think. And don't hate haha.

Most of the staff there ARE dubstep DJs. I wish it would go away and stay away. I hate dubstep almost as much as I hate trance.

Nothing wrong with dubstep. In the right hands it's a lot of fun and not boring. Stop listening to shitty djs :)

Same could be said for every genre.

Dubstep in my opinion is the fastest growing / if not now soon to be the most popular music these days.

Its not going anywhere and its come so far from where it was just a year or two ago. Its amazing. It seems to really connect to the younger generation of party goers.

I personally think that a lot of it is really great, its fun to listen and dance to.

I just played with DJ Dan, Monk, DJ ESP, Reid Speed, Keith MacKenzie, 12th Planet and Vaski in Michigan and nobody touched Vaski and 12th Planet. All the DJs got the crowd going but the energy and hype that those two brought to the table was unbelievable.

Kids were climbing the stage, constantly having to be thrown off. It was an awesome site.

i think it appeals to a younger crowd because it can be very aggressive, and I don't know about you, but I was all about the ME-TAL when i was younger.

Like any genre that gets a lot of attention quick, it gets over saturated with a bunch of garbage songs and bunch garbage dj's playing garbage songs.

The style is already progressing past its initial 'sound' and is getting quite dynamic with all sorts of subgenres emerging or hybridizing with other genres.

I think its great, but I think the best is yet to come as younger producers get into the game and just start running circles around the current producers.

I really can't wait to see where electronic music will be in just 5 years from now.

For me personally I don't care for 95% of what I hear. But then almost every genre has DJs that spin 95% of what every other DJ spins. So it takes a great DJ who knows what to do with THE CROWD for me to enjoy Dub.

Its a lot better than a lot of crap i hear.  It seems to be really popular with a lot of people who may formerly not have paid much attention to electronic music.  Personally I can take it or leave it, it doesn't really hit me in the 'spot' but at the same time it doesn't make me run away from the dancefloor.  I am a little tired of the umpteen bajillion posts all over the internet such as 'Have you heard dubstep' 'OMG dubstep' 'Do you like dubstep' etc etc.  Its funny that it blew up so fast, I havent really seen an electronic style blow up like that, going from obscure to the #1 talked about style in like a couple years.

At first... I didn't care for it. It was way too slow, boring, monotonous, and.... slow.

But then I heard the Bing Bong Twins track selection at some random show, and developed an appreciation for the genre. Like Psilo said...

I think its great, but I think the best is yet to come as younger producers get into the game and just start running circles around the current producers.

My favorite dubstep is when a producer remixes another song. Lately I've been in love with producers taking older songs and remixing them.
